The Middle Is Not a Mistake
Where growth happens when progress looks invisible
I used to believe the middle was something to endure. The waiting room between what was and what would be. The part of the story where you hold your breath and hope you do not lose your nerve.
Then I lived it.
I remember a morning in Nevada after my marriage ended. The sun came up like it always does, steady and indifferent, and I sat at my kitchen table with a cup of coffee that had gone cold. Nothing dramatic happened that day. No lightning bolt. No sudden clarity. Just a quiet realization: I cannot skip this part. I have to learn how to live here.
The core of it
Chapter 12 is where I name something most of us avoid saying out loud. Everybody loves a beginning and a satisfying ending. The middle is where life gets honest.
The middle is where you do the right things and still do not see results yet. Where you pray, and the answer feels slow. Where you make the hard choice, and your heart still aches anyway. The middle is where your old instincts come back and try to drive, because uncertainty makes us reach for anything that feels like control.
For me, making peace with the middle looked like small, faithful actions. I stopped trying to solve the entire future in one sitting. I stabilized what I could: a home that felt safe, routines that held me when my emotions could not. I focused on what I could actually influence today, not what I wished I could predict. I let relationships deepen instead of forcing a new identity overnight. I started letting the middle teach me its quiet language.
Here is what surprised me: the middle did not ruin me. It revealed me. It showed me where my confidence was real and where it was borrowed. It showed me what I reached for when I was scared. It also showed me God’s tenderness in the unglamorous places, in the ordinary mornings, in the slow rebuilding that no one applauds.
When you stop fighting the middle, you stop wasting your strength. You begin to notice that progress is happening, even when it is invisible. Especially when it is invisible.
