My life is messy, meaningful, and mine.

How I’m holding this now

In conversations on the podcast, I listen for the moment a guest bumps into their own unexpected path. I notice how often their greatest wisdom comes from what did not go according to plan. In my own life, I still live with the consequences of that nerve gas exposure, but I no longer see it as an interruption. It is part of the tapestry. My work is to stay present, tell the truth, and move forward with the next right step. Surrender, for me, isn’t passive. It is active trust—choosing to respond faithfully when life veers off script.

What if you learned to navigate your health before a crisis hits?

Today on Experience Over Expectation, I’m joined by Dana Sherwin, a longtime health system executive who became a stem cell transplant patient and, in the process, discovered a new calling: helping people become “thinking patients” who show up to the doctor’s office prepared, informed, and empowered.

Dana spent 35+ years inside hospitals, health plans, and consulting firms trying to improve patient–physician communication. Then her chronic blood disorder progressed, and she needed a stem cell transplant. Five weeks in the hospital and a long recovery flipped her vantage point from manager to patient.

At one point, Dana realized she was subconsciously “preparing to die.” Then she caught herself and asked: What if I prepare to live instead?
That shift changed everything.

The answer was not a paragraph. It was a pulse. The kind you notice when you stop arguing with yourself long enough to hear your life breathe.

The core of it

For a long season, theater was home. Some sold-out shows, others half-empty. Notes scribbled in the margins of scripts. That humming backstage air that smells like sawdust and fresh paint. I loved the work. I loved the people. Still, there was a quiet ache I could not tidy away with applause. I had grown restless.

It surfaced in small moments. A student lingering after class with a story that did not fit into rehearsal time. A stranger who said the play made them call their mother. My attention kept drifting past the curtain, toward the lives waiting outside the building. I realized I was not leaving a calling. I was widening it.

Pivoting did not look cinematic. It looked like cleaning my desk. Returning emails that had waited too long. Saying no to the projects that fit my talent but not my simmering quest. There were tears in the car that no one saw. There was relief I could not ignore. It’s called giving myself permission to pivot.

Here is what steady permission sounded like in my spirit: Keep what is true. Release what is timely. Carry your talent forward, but let it breathe where people live, not only where they sit and watch. The fear stayed for awhile, but it lost its authority when I honored what I knew.

I did not replace one identity with another. I let the roots go deeper and the branches find new light. It turns out, a calling can travel. It just asks you to travel with it.

How I’m holding this now

On the podcast, I wait through the long pause. Guests often walk themselves to truth if I do not rescue them from the silence. In my work, I use value guardrails: kindness, integrity, excellence. These are portable. They travel with me when the room changes.

I am learning to ask for clarity one day at a time. Not a blueprint, a breadcrumb. When I follow the next right crumb, provision keeps meeting me at the turn. Trust looks ordinary on the outside. Inside, it is a deep exhale.

A few years ago, just six weeks before air, a major broadcast network pulled a show my team and I had poured our hearts (and our sponsors’ dollars) into. It takes many months to schedule a show.

In the middle of Manhattan with a cast and production crew fully unaware, I watched a door slam that I could not pry back open. I felt the percussion when it happened, but I also processed the necessary actions: breathe, get honest about what’s real, and respond from your values. We stabilized what we could, told the truth, and kept moving.

The core of it

Control is a comforting myth until life taps us on the shoulder and says, “Not yours.” That day on set taught me that response is where the real authority lives. Not forcing outcomes—meeting reality with presence, the courage one can muster, and the next right move.

That’s the muscle I keep training. When I feel my shoulders rise and my jaw clench, I ask, “What’s mine to steward, and what belongs to the universe and time?” I write down what I can influence—my tone, my choices, my integrity—and release what I can’t. Then I take one good step. And then another. This isn’t some heroic reaction; far from it. The cold slice of fear is there every time.

I try for precision. Choosing values over panic. Choosing clarity over noise. When I do, the day rearranges itself. The phone call lands. The idea arrives. And even if the outcome is still uncertain, I’m not.

In the end, we found another network, just in the nick of time. All was fine, as it most often is.

And in my faith, I’m remembering that surrender isn’t giving up; it’s giving back what was never mine to control in the first place.
